My first one thousand photos

Wow. A few days ago, I spotted the photo ‘ticker’ on my camera’s SD card was #1104… “I’ve taken over a thousand shots already!?!” I thought to myself.

Now, it was a very quick realisation that most of these first 1000 thousand shots are RUBBISH. Beyond rubbish. Many of them not even recognisable; out of focus, motion blurred, white-washed, under-exposed, noisy, poorly composed…. you name it. And I love it. I love the freshness of this learning curve. For now, I am just as clueless with the camera as I am with editing a tone curve, but I’m really enjoying the learning process, and just getting to know my camera.

Excited to see where this journey will take me :)

Dynamic Range

Looking back through my first thousand shots, I’m glad to have already tried out (mostly unsuccessfully) a number of different shooting environments and subjects. There have been a good few strolls along the Clontarf seafront - which I’m lucky to have on my doorstep - but also have enjoyed attempting to capture my closest friends at a BBQ and even some cars driving in the night.

I think overall I’m most drawn to landscape or ‘urbanscape’-esque photography, but it’s too early days to decide this will be the only kind I explore. As a strategy, I think exploring all kinds of shooting opportunities over the next few months will help me learn and explore different styles firstly, before beginning to refine and focus my lens more.

‘Rookie Numbers’

I’m not really sure if there’s a growth curve associated with the number of shots a photographer takes to build their skills, but I’m trying to take a balance to take shots in abundance and learning from all of them; whether that’s from composing the shot in camera, or beaming it up into Lightroom. I’m proud to have reached this milestone, however small.

They may be rookie numbers, but they’re my numbers. And I’m looking forward to pumping them some more 😉

I’m excited.
